Orthodontic Dentistry

Orthodontic Dentistry focuses on teeth and jawbone alignment to improve one’s smile and oral health. Crooked teeth are not only hard to clean, but also at risks of tooth decay and gum diseases. Deciding between traditional braces or Invisalign aligners may be quite a challenge. Our dentists will work with you and your goals to help guide you to the appropriate treatment plan which may include referral to an orthodontist for treatment including traditional braces.

Invisalign

Invisalign also referred to as “invisible braces” have a customized aligner tray made of smooth, clear plastic worn over the teeth.

How Do They Work?

Depending on an orthodontist plan, the customized aligner tray is worn to move the teeth gently. A new set of trays is given every two weeks as the treatment progresses. The aligner trays are quite comfortable and can be worn for an average of 22 hours per day. However, Invisalign is strictly reserved for teens and adults only.

Benefits of Invisalign

When it comes to braces for teens and adults, Invisalign is a favorite option because of the following reasons:

  • The convenience of invisibility thus reducing the chances of user embarrassment
  • There are no food restrictions as they are removed when eating and returned afterward
  • Brushing and flossing continues normally without worry for food traps between teeth

Common Issues Treated With Invisalign

  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Over spaced teeth
  • Cross bites
  • Underbites
  • Overbites

Traditional Braces

In orthodontic therapy, conventional metal braces are the most common type of dental braces. They are silver-colored brackets made of a combination of nickel, stainless steel, and other materials. They are durable and do not break easily.

How They Work?

Traditional Braces consist of brackets bonded to the front part of the teeth. They all come in different shapes and sizes. Each bracket has edges with metal or rubber bands tied around to hold an orthodontic wire in place. The wires are gradually replaced as the teeth recover to enable alignment; the wire allows the teeth to move and the bracket acts as an anchor.

Benefits of Traditional Braces

  • They are durable and do not break easily
  • Metal braces are cost effective, unlike other modern forms of orthodontic therapy
  • They are convenient for kids, teens, and adults
  • Metal braces come in a variety of colors depending on individual specifications

Caring For Braces

Brush and floss regularly
Brushing and flossing will help you avoid staining the braces. With metal braces, for instance, dentists may recommend a special toothbrush to get into the surfaces of the metal braces.

Attend regular appointments
Since braces are worn over an extended period, it is important to follow the orthodontist’s instructions carefully. Ensure regular dental checkups to allow for any necessary adjustments and addressing key concerns.

Avoid foods that are not friendly
Stick to the list of foods recommended by the orthodontist to keep braces in good shape and reduce the risk of cavities. Certain foods and vegetables can be stuck in braces such as hard, crunchy foods that damage braces.
